Micrel Introduces 7-Way Integrated Boost LED Driver

Summary: Micrel announces the industry's smallest and most powerful light-emitting diode (LED) driver for portable devices, the MIC2298. The device is a 7-watt high efficiency step-up DC-to-DC converter packaged in a small 3 mm X3 mm MLF(R) package. For flash and flashlight lighting applications in mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and digital cameras, the MIC2298 is available now in volume quantities starting at $1.65 each in 1,000-unit quantities.

Ralph Münster, director of power product marketing at Micrel, said: "Mobile phones and PDAs have greatly improved the camera pixels they provide to consumers. However, even these high-pixel cameras are still low. Poor performance in the case of brightness. Micrel's new MIC2298 LED driver enables designers to take advantage of a high-brightness LED flash to improve the performance of their integrated camera, with the most space and battery required."

The MIC2298 ensures a 3.5 amps of switching current, allowing the device to deliver 1 amp of current through two series of high-brightness white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). This produces a bright flash to improve photo quality, especially for 2 megapixel or higher pixel cameras. The brightness of the LED can be applied to the brightness setting pin by applying voltage or pulse width modulation (PWM)
The signal is dynamically controlled. The IC operates at a fixed conversion frequency of 1MHz with an efficiency of over 86%. This high efficiency makes the battery last longer, and its ultra-small size makes Micrel's MIC2298 the best solution for driving high-brightness LEDs in advanced mobile phones and PDA devices. The MIC2298 solution requires only a small 2.2uH inductor and a small ceramic capacitor to minimize its size and minimize the cost of the solution. In addition, this solution operates from an input voltage range of 2.5 volts to 10 volts, consistent with the operating range of single- and dual-cell lithium batteries.
