Are you tired of conventional RPGs that keep improving but never fully immerse you in their worlds of adventure and challenge? One of the most popular HTC Vive games on Steam is Craft Keeper VR. This game flips the script on traditional roles; instead of being the savior of the world, you take on the role of the craftsman who supplies heroes with essential gear.
Craftsman VR is a VR adaptation of the PC game Adventurer’s Store, developed by Arvydas Zemaitis and distributed by Excalibur Game Company. In this game, you’ll embody an artisan tasked with crafting weapons and potions. While the original game allowed players to simply sell weapons to adventurers, here you'll need to personally forge top-tier weapons and powerful potions to supply NPCs, helping them defeat 50 formidable bosses.
The gameplay combines business and simulation modes. You’ll set up shop along the adventurer's path, fulfilling their various needs by either forging weapons or concocting healing remedies. When crafting weapons, you're encouraged to get creative—using high-quality ores and alternating between water and fire to temper your creations into sharp tools of destruction. Additionally, you can repair battered weapons for others. In alchemy, you’re like a mad scientist, experimenting with herbs and fiddling with steam-powered contraptions. Zemaitis even experimented with a multiplayer mode, though in this mode, players must use traditional mouse and keyboard controls.
Every aspect of the game requires player involvement. To build a weapon, you must follow a series of steps, starting with smelting the appropriate ore, pouring it into a mold, and hammering it into shape. As you progress, you can incorporate magical stones to imbue your weapons with elemental powers like ice and fire. Eventually, you might craft something truly unique, like a curved blade. These interactions enhance immersion significantly.
However, while the simulation elements are immersive, they can feel overly tedious and time-consuming. The current version still has some bugs; players often need multiple attempts to successfully mold or assemble weapons, wasting valuable time. The physics engine is also problematic—it’s easy for hammers to damage molds, and there’s no feedback from the handle. Even though the process feels authentic, the satisfaction of creating something by hand is somewhat diminished.
"Artisan VR" retains the 3D cartoon aesthetic of its predecessor, "Adventurer’s Store." While this style may not foster deep immersion, it doesn't detract from the gameplay either. Players focus more on the interactive aspects than the visual design. The sound design is commendable, with realistic insect and bird sounds providing an ambient soundtrack. During alchemy or weapon creation, distinct sound effects accompany your actions, adding to the game’s immersion. When adventurers arrive, they greet you with quirky dialogue, further enhancing the atmosphere.
Currently, "Artisan VR" is in pre-release status, offering a limited demo version with just a brief storyline and interactive gameplay. By the official launch in 2017, Zemaitis plans to add more storylines and gameplay modes.
At $43, the game offers a novel concept. I recommend adding it to your wishlist first, as updates will likely introduce more content before the final release.
