In recent days, one of the most significant developments in the industry has been the groundbreaking integration of the world's first NB-IoT smart lock for shared bicycles and the AI big data platform called "Singularity." This combination merges mobile internet with cloud computing, pushing the boundaries of the Internet of Things (IoT). The small yellow bike is now set to become the gateway into the era of the Internet of Everything.
At the Stanford China Forum in Berkeley a few days ago, Xue Ding, co-founder of ofo, spoke about the company entering its "4.0 era" — a phase focused on accelerating IoT and AI development. This vision was also echoed at Huawei’s 2017 Global Connect Conference. His enthusiasm stems from ofo’s leadership in advancing mobile IoT applications through key technical innovations.
On September 26th, ofo officially launched its 4.0 era, titled “Re-defining Sharing with Technology.†At the event, they introduced the latest model of their shared bike, the "Wasp," along with the industry’s first NFC smart lock and an NB-IoT IoT smart lock developed jointly with China Telecom and Huawei. Additionally, the "Singularity" AI big data platform made its public debut, marking a complete technological loop from user experience to data collection and analysis.
The image below highlights how ofo has achieved the perfect match between IoT and artificial intelligence, positioning itself as the first entry point into the mobile IoT era.
What stands out is that this golden combination of NB-IoT smart locks and the "Singularity" system has created a seamless integration between mobile IoT and big data cloud computing. It has laid a strong foundation for scaling IoT applications.
Earlier this year, ofo launched the world's first IoT smart lock, based on NB-IoT technology, which marked the first commercial use of this technology in mobile scenarios. With millions of bikes equipped with these smart locks, ofo became the first to break the ice in the global IoT industry, turning years of R&D into real-world application.
Notably, in February, ofo faced challenges while developing the NB-IoT smart lock alongside China Telecom and Huawei. At the time, the NB-IoT network wasn’t fully deployed, so the three companies had to simulate different signal environments using Huawei’s open lab. Additionally, there were no existing resources for managing smart locks on the software side, making it a major challenge for network adaptability. Despite these obstacles, the collaboration managed to develop the product in near-vacuum conditions.
Hard work paid off. In June, after the completion of China Telecom’s NB-IoT network in Beijing, the first road test of the NB-IoT smart lock was successfully completed. This achievement not only showcased the strong R&D capabilities of the three parties but also reflected their commitment to promoting IoT applications.
Compared to traditional 2G smart locks, the NB-IoT smart lock brings a revolutionary upgrade. Its most notable feature is ultra-low power consumption, allowing the battery life to last the entire lifecycle of the bike. Additionally, NB-IoT signals penetrate better than existing networks, ensuring smooth lock operations even in tunnels or underground parking lots. Moreover, NB-IoT can support up to 100 times more devices than traditional networks, preventing disconnection even in densely populated areas like Shanghai Bund or Beijing Wudaokou.
With the strength of NB-IoT technology, ofo has established an unbreakable connection between every small yellow bike and between vehicles. This device interconnectivity is the core of the IoT. Each ofo smart lock acts as a smart node, generating intelligent information and serving as a data entry point. Data such as vehicle location, movement trajectory, riding distance, and parking time can all be collected.
Collecting data from tens of millions of bikes used by millions of users daily is massive, representing the most important production data in the IoT era. The "Singularity" system plays a crucial role in processing this data effectively.
Centered around "people, vehicles, and places," the "Singularity" system connects 10 million bikes and 200 million users across 180 cities worldwide. It provides comprehensive city data, enabling refined management in areas like vehicle scheduling, user response, real-time monitoring of silent or sub-health bikes, and automatic identification of vehicle locations and demand. This allows for intelligent and efficient operations, ensuring that users can ride anytime, anywhere, and that bikes remain in good condition.
Another exciting aspect is that the "Singularity" system uses AI to analyze vehicle usage data, enhancing operational efficiency and offering insights into various life scenarios connected by the small yellow bike.
As Xue Ding mentioned, today’s big data still relies on phones and computers. But with the arrival of the IoT era, the world will become a vast data repository, where everything related to human life will be connected and capable of processing information. ofo aims to position the small yellow bike as a key node in the smart city, linking various IoT devices to form a large database, making daily life, travel, and transportation smarter. ofo is determined to be the first entry point into the mobile IoT era.
For instance, through NB-IoT connectivity, the small yellow bike can link with various devices like computers, air conditioners, TVs, rice cookers, street lamps, and merchant goods, creating a typical "Internet of Everything" scenario. This data will feed back into the "Singularity" system, becoming advanced productivity data.
Based on the Internet of Everything, deep intelligent analysis of this big data, combined with each user's daily life, can bring us closer to the smart life seen in science fiction. Imagine, for example, that when you ride home at night, your Xiaomi smart home adjusts the temperature and humidity based on your physical condition feedback from the bike. Streetlights on the route automatically turn on, and your Alibaba smart speaker recommends the best food and daily necessities for you. This is the future of a fully connected world — a smart life that becomes the norm.
