Frequency Domain Optimized Power Amplifier Gain Block Series

Avago Technologies announced the launch of two new gain module solutions that extend its line of high-performance power amplifiers for mobile communications infrastructure applications. The new MGA-31589 and MGA-31689 0.5-watt gain modules feature high linearity, high gain, excellent gain flatness, and low power consumption. The MGA-31589 gain module solves the communication scheme for 450 to 1500 MHz operation for mobile communication and WiMAX wireless base stations and other wireless systems, while the MGA-31689 device solves the communication scheme for 1500 to 3000 MHz operation for these applications.

The MGA-31x89 amplifier series is frequency-optimized and is designed to improve operating performance for the major mobile communications bands - GSM, CDMA and UMTS, and next-generation LTE bands. The new gain module works with 0.25-watt MGA-31189 and MGA-31289 devices and 0.10-watt MGA-31389 and MGA-31489 devices for applications ranging from 50 to 3000 MHz.

The MGA-31x89 devices are available in a compact, industry-standard SOT-89 package. Matching various output power options with a common package size and PCB layout allows a single design to support multiple frequency and regional market needs. The gain module can also replace the pin-in-pin solution in the existing market, and simple alternatives reflect better linearity and power performance.

The high gain capabilities of these devices can reduce the total number of required RF phases. The gain performance of the MGA-31x89 series can be achieved with Avago's proprietary technology, the 0.25 μm GaAs enhancement mode pHEMT semiconductor process.

Performance of MGA-31589 and MGA-31689 Under general operating conditions of 5V and 146mA, the performance of MGA-31589 includes 20.4 dB gain, output third-order intercept point (OIP3) 45.3 mW, and 1 dB gain compression (P1dB). 27.2 milliwatts of decibel output power and a noise figure of 1.9 dB at 900 MHz. In addition, the MGA-31589 device exhibits excellent gain flatness of less than 0.2 dB over a bandwidth of 100 MHz.

Under the general operating conditions of 5V and 146mA, the performance of MGA-31689 includes 18.1dB gain, output 3rd order intercept point (OIP3) 44.9mWdB, 1dB gain compression (P1dB) to deliver 27.6mW output power and The noise figure is 1.9 dB at 1900 MHz. The MGA-31689 device also exhibits excellent gain flatness of less than 0.2 dB over 100 MHz bandwidth.
