NXP pushes the A71CH Secure Element (SE) trust anchor to secure IoT devices and connectivity

Nuremberg, Germany (2018 Embedded Systems Show) – February 27, 2018 – NXP Semiconductors NV, a leading provider of secure IoT embedded solutions across various market applications (ticker: NXPI), introduced the A71CH Secure Element (SE) Trust Anchor at the 2018 Embedded Systems Show in Nuremberg. This new security chip is designed to enhance the protection of next-generation IoT devices, including edge nodes and gateways, by offering an instant-on security solution for point-to-point or cloud-based connections. The A71CH is pre-configured with essential confidential information to enable seamless cloud access and peer-to-peer authentication. It establishes a root of trust (RoT) at the chip level, incorporating features such as encryption key storage, key generation, and derivation to safeguard private data and support two-way authentication. Philippe Dubois, general manager of NXP’s IoT security solutions, stated, “Enterprises are increasingly aware of the importance of securing IoT devices and connectivity in future cloud applications. However, many lack the expertise or the right security solution. The A71CH is built with all the necessary technical configurations to meet the growing security demands of the mass market, ensuring a secure foundation for the evolving IoT landscape.” The A71CH stands out with its “plug-and-write” approach, simplifying integration with security and cloud access through master chipset functions and compatibility with a wide range of NXP microcontroller (MCU and MPU) platforms, such as Kinetis and i.MX. To further ease development, sample code and detailed application notes are provided, reducing the complexity of design processes. In addition to NXP’s trusted configuration services, customers can also take advantage of personalized options through Data I/O, a global leader in security configuration and device programming systems. This collaboration ensures that even developers with limited security knowledge can innovate and deploy robust security solutions efficiently. Key features of the A71CH include: - Protected access to sensitive information - Access to the encryption/authentication interface of the master processor - Certificate-based TLS settings (NIST P-256) - TLS setup using a preset shared key (TLS-PSK) - Wireless message authentication (HMAC) - ECC key generation and signature verification - Symmetric key derivation - Encryption library for product master key (key wrapping, derivation, locking) - Encryption key injection The A71CH supports NXP’s vision of driving edge computing applications in a smart and secure manner. Built on NXP’s proven identity portfolio, which has achieved significant success in markets such as authentication, payments, transportation, and access control, the A71CH is positioned to become a cornerstone in the next wave of secure IoT deployments.
