Foreword
First of all, I would like to thank you for giving me a try with the Egret A6 Smart Drive Blu-ray Disc Player (A6 for short) in the New Year. I wish the platform to become even more powerful in the coming year! Now, let me briefly introduce my movie experience.
I consider myself a true Blu-ray enthusiast—not the kind of online pseudo-blue light seen in boxes, but actual original Blu-ray movies. After watching a few films in the cinema, I decided to purchase a Blu-ray disc and enjoy the visual impact of high-definition movies again. Especially 3D Blu-ray is much better than cinema. The devices I used were PS4 and LG Blu-ray players.
However, some movies are not available as genuine Blu-ray discs at home, so I often have to download them via torrents. The problem here is that more and more Blu-ray discs now come with Cinavia’s silent watermarks, which can be really annoying when they’re playing. A few years ago, I spent around 6,000 yuan to set up a dedicated living room system for watching Blu-ray, and it came with AnyDVD software to bypass Cinavia. But if I wanted to watch 3D original disks, I had to go through NVIDIA and spend about 10 minutes setting it up each time.
I was looking for a powerful and easy-to-use Blu-ray player, and the Egret A6 fully meets all my requirements and has been a great companion.
Out of the Box
After confirming my participation in the trial, the product was sent from Beijing to Wuxi, Jiangsu, and it only took two days. The efficiency of Guoguo and Shunfeng was impressive.
The outer packaging of the A6 inherited the style of Yigeerui: black and gold fonts, which give a premium feel. The package highlights include 4K 60Hz output, support for Blu-ray native menus and poster wall, which really appealed to me.
Inside the box, I found an HDMI 2.0A cable, host protection sponge, the A6 itself, remote control, batteries, power supply, and cables. The A6 is compact, almost the same size as the remote control. Compared to the A10 Pro, it's significantly smaller.
The remote control of the A6 uses glossy black material and has 50 keys, while the A10 Pro has 60 keys. The A6 remote has good ergonomics and backlighting. The front of the machine has a matte black surface, different from the brushed finish of the A10 Pro.
On the right side of the machine is a hard disk enclosure, which supports 3.5-inch desktop hard drives. The back of the machine includes various ports such as Gigabit LAN, USB 2.0/3.0, HDMI, and audio/video outputs. The bottom feet are covered with soundproof rubber to reduce resonance during operation.
The A6 uses an external power supply module, which is universal and easy to replace. The manual is thick and detailed, explaining every function thoroughly.
Display interface shows the current output resolution, connected WiFi, and time. The LED panel display indicates how long the movie has been playing.
Comparison of Appearance
The biggest difference between the A6 and the A10 Pro is its smaller size and built-in dual-band WiFi antenna instead of an external one. The A10 Pro has a brushed silver finish, while the A6 has a matte black finish. Although the A6 lacks some advanced features like the internal power supply and SATA interface, it still offers a wide range of interfaces suitable for most users.
Internal Structure
Unscrewing the bottom and back screws reveals the WiFi and Bluetooth antenna on the left side. The A6 uses a Hass Hi3798C 4K chip, Samsung eMMC 8GB, and Hynix DDR3 memory. The cooling fan is located at the rear, and the USB 3.0 interface is shielded to prevent noise interference.
USB 3.0 Speed Test
Testing with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc "Pacific Rim" showed that the USB 3.0 interface can handle high data rates. The read speed reached 43.7MB/s, and the write speed was 40MB/s. This is more than enough for 4K UHD Blu-ray playback.
WiFi Speed Test
Using a 1.13GB file over 5G WiFi, the transfer speed was around 12.6MB/s, which is sufficient for streaming 4K content. The 2.4G signal was slower, but it's recommended to use 5G for better performance.
A6 System Function Introduction
The A6 runs a deeply customized Android system, allowing users to adjust settings, manage subtitles, and access online applications. It also supports Kodi for additional media playback.
Video Play Function Display
The A6 supports SAMBA/NFS LAN sharing, making it easy to stream movies from a network drive without constantly swapping disks. The poster wall feature makes browsing movies more intuitive, automatically generating posters for all types of videos.
Play Experience
The A6 works well with high-end home theater systems, delivering excellent 4K UHD output. The image engine allows manual adjustments for a personalized viewing experience.
In Summary
For Blu-ray enthusiasts, using a PC to play Blu-ray is complicated, and ordinary TV boxes lack the necessary decoding capabilities. The Egret A6 fills this gap by being a professional and user-friendly Blu-ray player. Simply connect a USB or hard disk with your favorite Blu-ray collection, and the A6 handles the rest. Its poster wall feature automatically organizes your library, making it easier to find and enjoy your movies. If you're a Blu-ray lover like me, why not own an A6?
