On February 1, 2018, a military and avionics website reported that the U.S. Air Force is investing $33.6 million over five years to launch a groundbreaking sensor fusion initiative. This project aims to significantly boost the performance of surveillance radars by integrating advanced optoelectronic technologies, including visible light, infrared, multispectral, and hyperspectral sensors. The goal is to create more accurate and reliable detection systems for modern combat environments.
This week, officials from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory announced the "Precision Real-Time Combat Operations Identification Sensor Development" (PRECISE) program. The initiative is designed to combine multiple radio frequency (RF) and optoelectronic sensors, while also enhancing radar capabilities through advanced signal processing techniques, adaptive bandwidth allocation, and
other cutting-edge algorithms. While traditional radar systems have been in use for decades, adversaries are increasingly seeking ways to degrade their effectiveness, especially over long distances.
The PRECISE project focuses on improving radar signal processing and integrating data from other sensors to resolve ambiguities and enhance the identification of distant targets. This approach is critical for maintaining superiority in contested electromagnetic environments where traditional radar may struggle.
The project centers on developing enabling technologies that improve battlefield situational awareness, with a particular focus on the ability of reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft to detect and identify both airborne and ground-based targets. These advancements will not only strengthen current operations but also prepare for future threats.
As part of the program, the technologies developed under PRECISE will be tested in real-world conditions through flight demonstrations on surveillance aircraft. This step is essential to validate the system’s performance and ensure its readiness for deployment in operational settings. With this investment, the U.S. Air Force is taking a major step toward next-generation sensor fusion capabilities that will shape the future of aerial surveillance and combat operations.
