In a groundbreaking effort to enhance road safety, Brazilian researchers are pioneering an innovative system designed to prevent collisions between vehicles and wildlife. At the forefront of this initiative is ViaFauna, a company founded by biologist Fernanda Delborgo Abra, who has developed a cutting-edge animal detection technology called *Passa-Bicho*.
This system, supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation, utilizes a network of motion sensors that work in pairs—each set strategically placed in high-risk areas where wildlife encounters with vehicles are most frequent. The core mechanism involves an infrared beam emitted by a transmitter and received by a sensor. When an animal crosses the beam, it disrupts the signal, triggering an alert.
Once activated, the system sends a radio signal to a nearby electronic display or lights up a "Wildlife Crossing" warning sign, providing drivers with real-time alerts. This helps reduce the likelihood of accidents, especially in regions where roads intersect with natural habitats.
Powered entirely by solar panels, the system is designed to detect animals weighing over 6.6 pounds (approximately 3 kilograms). This focus on larger animals is due to both their significant impact on road safety and the current technological limitations of the system.
ViaFauna is currently planning field tests at the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture, part of the University of São Paulo, to evaluate the device’s performance under various weather conditions. If successful, this technology could be deployed across Brazil’s vast road networks, offering a sustainable and effective solution to a growing environmental and safety challenge.
