New Google Glass is Expected to Increase Revenue by US$2 Billion for Alphabet

NetEase Technology News, July 19th—According to CNBC reports, Google Glass, once seen as a controversial tool for privacy concerns, was shunned by consumers three years ago. However, it appears to be finding its niche again. X, the research arm of Google's parent company Alphabet, led by Google co-founder Sergey Brin, is now focusing on creating enterprise versions tailored for professionals such as doctors, warehouse managers, and others. The image accompanying this article shows what the updated Google Glass might look like. Despite its initial setback, Google must now figure out how to bring these products to market to generate significant revenue for the parent company. Its current experience in this area mainly revolves around selling cloud computing services and digital advertising. Previously, Google Glass was priced at $1,500 when it first launched. Market research firm Forrester Research predicts that by 2025, 14.4 million American workers will be using smart glasses. Based on this projection, if Google Glass can capture between 50% to 100% of the market within eight years, it could add between $1 billion to $2 billion to Alphabet's revenue. To put this into perspective, Alphabet's total revenue last year was $90.3 billion, with non-advertising businesses (such as hardware sales and Google Play) contributing just $10 billion overall. When CNBC reached out via email for the latest pricing information on Google Glass, they did not receive an immediate reply. To meet this ambitious target, Google will need to either secure experienced distribution partners to introduce the hardware into enterprises or explore innovative marketing strategies targeting small and medium-sized businesses. Jay Kothari, who heads the Google Glass project, mentioned in a recent blog post that their current strategy involves collaborating with the Google Cloud team and other partners to enable businesses across various sectors to try out Google Glass. However, despite years of effort, Google's cloud computing division continues to lag significantly behind competitors like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. While Google Glass may have been ahead of its time initially, the evolving needs of industries like healthcare and logistics might provide the right environment for it to succeed this time around.
