The smart TV is getting thinner and thinner. From the initial thick old-fashioned television to the thickness of a few millimeters today, this time, LGD has brought up against the "wallpaper" TV set, less than 1mm thick. LG Display's production subsidiary, LG Display (hereinafter referred to as LGD), is energetically developing its OLED panel business and demonstrating that they can achieve extremely thin TV panels with advanced technologies. On May 19, LGD presented a "wallpaper" concept television at a news conference in South Korea. It is understood that this 55-inch OLED display weighs only 1.9kg, thickness does not even exceed 1mm. The concept TV, like a wallpaper, can be directly attached to the wall, but the wall must also be installed with a matching magnetic gasket to fix it.
Now, OLED is widely considered to be the next frontier technology in the television field. The organic compound layer added by this technology can not only make the screen thinner, but also realize the surface is no longer a problem. In addition, since organic materials can emit light by themselves, manufacturers do not need to consider the problem of backlight during the production process. In addition to the television field, OLEDs will find use in wearable devices and other mobile products. LGD believes that OLED will certainly become a very useful display technology in various electronic products in the future.
Although companies such as Samsung, LG, and Sony are now starting to use OLED displays in their products, its cost is still very high. One of the reasons is the low yield. It is reported that the price of the LG 65-inch 4K OLED TV is as high as 9,000 US dollars (equivalent to approximately RMB 55,858).
Taking into account all of the above factors, LGD's "wallpaper" TV sets do not seem likely to be brought to market.
LGD said at the press conference that the company’s target for sales of OLED TV panels this year is 600,000 units, and it will increase to 1.5 million next year.
