Coming soon into the fast lane artificial smart TV or will become "standard"

Artificial intelligence has undoubtedly become one of the most talked-about topics this year. Since 2016, the television industry has started to incorporate AI into its strategies, and this year we’ve seen a significant maturation of AI-powered TV products. On the 26th, during an industry summit forum in Beijing, the China Electronic Chamber of Commerce and JD.com jointly released the “2017 Artificial Intelligence TV White Paper,” providing insights into the current state and future trends of the domestic AI TV market. Accompanying this launch was the formal establishment of the “Artificial Intelligence Television Industry Alliance,” comprising major players like Changhong, TCL, Hisense, LeEco, Xiaomi, and others. This alliance aims to bring together industry leaders and academics to foster innovation, drive technological breakthroughs, and enhance marketing efforts in integrating AI into the television sector. The White Paper provides a definitive definition of what constitutes an AI TV. It emphasizes that these TVs must be able to receive user commands via sensors, interpret user intentions using basic applications and data platforms, and respond accordingly. They should also utilize advanced algorithms and big data analytics to learn from user behavior, offering personalized recommendations and interactions. Consumer interest in AI TVs is growing rapidly. A survey conducted by the Consumer Electronics Research Office revealed that among emerging TV technologies like OLED, quantum dots, lasers, and AI, artificial intelligence ranked highest with 38% awareness among consumers. This indicates that AI is now a key consideration for many when purchasing a TV. Despite advancements, however, the current capabilities of AI TVs still lag behind full-fledged artificial intelligence. For instance, while voice recognition accuracy for leading brands averages around 97% and smart recommendations hit 93%, there's still room for improvement in areas like search functionality and refining recommendation scopes. Notably, the integration of AI into TVs is transforming them from mere screens into central hubs for smart homes. As Lu Jiebo, a prominent expert in home appliances, noted, traditional attributes like high picture quality and sound are no longer sufficient to sustain TV's role as a family entertainment center. AI is infusing TVs with new life, enabling intuitive controls, multifunctional applications, and connectivity across household devices. JD.com has capitalized on this trend by launching the “AI TV Festival” to push product upgrades and cater to evolving consumer demands. JD.com’s big data shows that over the past year, searches containing the term "AI" have surged, reflecting increased consumer interest in tech-savvy products. From just 13.3% of flat-panel TV SKUs being AI-enabled in July 2016, this figure has risen to 26.5% a year later. Yang Zisheng, head of JD.com's Black Metal Marketing Division, highlighted that while display and audio technologies have reached maturity, it’s the integration of AI that’s driving fresh innovations. These new features are not only enhancing user experiences but also becoming a significant growth driver in the TV industry. In conclusion, the rise of AI TVs represents a paradigm shift in how we interact with our living spaces. As we move forward, the synergy between tech companies and appliance manufacturers will continue to push boundaries, ensuring that TVs remain relevant and indispensable in our increasingly digital lives.
