Data explosion in 3G / 4G era TI small base station baseband chips easily challenge

The advent of the mobile Internet era has brought a sharp rise in the volume of mobile communication data, and how to deal with the surge in traffic has become a problem faced by operators. For this problem, the improvement of the spectrum efficiency of the macro base station cannot be completely solved, and the small base station has unique advantages in improving coverage, providing higher network capacity, and reducing energy consumption, and plays a role in helping the macro base station to disperse the pressure of the data flow. With great effect, miniaturization of base stations may become the most direct and effective means to solve this problem.

However, the deployment of small base stations faces many problems: how to power the equipment? How does the data flow back? How to lay out, how to install and how to control the market, etc. At the same time, we must also consider the upgradeability of small base stations, such as upgrading from 3G to LTE, should we upgrade software or hardware? In addition, the Chinese market also has the special features of supporting 3G systems of TD-SCDMA, WCDMA and CDMA2000, and 4G systems of TD-LTE and FDD LTE. Operators urgently need a unified, flexible and scalable platform Multi-mode and smooth upgrade from 3G to 4G; for small cell equipment manufacturers, how to make their equipment meet the needs of multi-mode support and scalability while having low power consumption and differentiated characteristics is their concern Importantly, they want a scalable and high-performance platform to help them achieve differentiated products.

Texas Instruments' small base station baseband chip supports PoE + and transmission performance up to 3mpps, can achieve traffic aggregation, and provides 3G, 4G and WiFi integrated transmission. Texas Instruments (TI) recently released TCI6630K2L is a solution to meet this demand, it is a BOM optimized low-power base station baseband chip for indoor enterprise PoE + and outdoor pico base station developers. Brian Glinsman, vice president of TI's processor business, said that the TCI6630K2L system-on-chip based on KeyStone architecture will integrate various features and performance standards that support the same macro service. Different indoor and outdoor use requirements, but also can bring differentiated characteristics through programmability, modify the platform according to evolving needs. The company also paired the latest analog radio frequency chip AFE7500 for TCI6630K2L. The combination of the two can fully meet the strict base station power consumption and cost requirements without affecting performance characteristics. Challenge to achieve a huge breakthrough.

According to reports, TCI6630K2L is a platform that supports PoE +, using a dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 RISC processor and four TI fixed floating point TMS320C66x digital signal processor (DSP) cores. This solution is highly integrated with the digital radio frequency front end (DRFE) and supports features such as crest factor reduction (CFR) and digital predistortion (DPD). In addition, TCI6630K2L also contains a powerful network co-processor that supports transmission performance up to 3mpps, which can achieve traffic aggregation and provide 3G, 4G and WiFi integrated transmission. In addition, it also integrates a complete 4-port Gigabit Ethernet switch, eliminating the need for external small cellular components, helping to save costs.

This solution platform can help OEM manufacturers develop a high-performance indoor enterprise small cell scalable product portfolio that supports up to 128 users. It perfectly combines L1 / L2 / L3 baseband performance with a fully integrated digital radio front end, and fully meets the application requirements of single-band, dual-band, synchronous dual-mode, and carrier aggregation within the PoE + power budget (less than 25W). "TI's TCI6630K2L can be said to be the industry's first base station solution that can do this function," Glinsman emphasized. In addition, the device provides the performance headroom needed to meet more advanced requirements, helping operators use a single solution for indoor and outdoor deployments to ensure their platforms meet future needs and expand them.

The baseband chip TCI6630K2L is connected to the analog front-end transceiver AFE7500 through the highly efficient industry-standard interface JESD204B, which not only simplifies the interconnection between the two chips and guarantees performance, but also eliminates the external glue logic between the RF transceiver and the digital baseband. Demand, which can further reduce the board space of small cellular base stations. The complete solution composed of these two devices can effectively improve the efficiency of the power amplifier, while reducing the overall power consumption of the indoor solution by up to 8W. The integrated CFR and DPD inside the baseband chip can even help achieve an energy saving of 2W per day at an output power of 125mW, which is especially important to meet the needs of PoE +.

In addition to the AFE7500, TI also provides clocks and power supplies for Ethernet solutions at both ends of the cable to help equipment manufacturers systematically solve the challenges of small cells. "TI's long-term leadership in base station technology, coupled with analog expertise, can provide a better wireless experience for all users, from customers to network operators to small cell manufacturers." Glinsman said.

In terms of software support, TCI6630K2L integrates the complete software development package keyStone Base Station SoftwarePac (a production-ready small cellular PHY software suite), including SoC platform drivers, multi-core software development kits, RF development kits, and standard small cell physical interfaces. The development kit provides a complete PHY layer for single-dual mode LTE and WCDMA, eliminating one of the most complex tasks in base station design. The supplementary package of TCI6630K2L also includes pre-integrated DRFE software and AFE software development kit, developers can seamlessly plan all digital radio components including DPD. The complete software solution helps manufacturers save the time, resources and budget normally required for PHY development, and provides sufficient programmable space so that they can customize differentiated small cellular products according to the needs of different network operators.

"China's 3G and 4G markets are a very fast-growing market, and the complete solution of chip + software we provide can help users achieve the highest aggregated products, help accelerate the time to market and provide a high degree of flexibility, so that products can easily meet the operators. Demand. Our solution can make the most of the advantages of TDD, can arbitrarily configure upstream and downstream bandwidth and support single-frequency or dual-frequency modes; a single chip integrates DPD / CFR at the level of a macro base station, which can be seamlessly linked to RF and can also be reduced Power consumption and cost; our platform has excellent performance and energy efficiency, supports carrier aggregation, and the overall board-level power consumption is less than 20W, which meets PoE + requirements. "Glinsman concluded.
