Introduction to IEEE1588V2 protocol

One. 1588v2 Introduction
1588 History
In order to solve the shortage of Ethernet timing synchronization capabilities, the computer and network industries have developed a software-based network time protocol (NTP) to improve the timing synchronization capabilities between network devices. The synchronization accuracy of subsequent NTP versions can reach the μs level, but it still cannot meet the accuracy required by measuring instruments and industrial control. In order to address the need for timing synchronization of distributed networks for measurement and control applications, the IEEE 1588 standard was born.
The full name of the IEEE1588 protocol is "Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol Standard for Network Measurement and Control Systems". It is a general specification for improving the timing synchronization capability of network systems, enabling distributed communication networks to have strict timing synchronization and applied to industrial automation systems. The basic idea is to synchronize the internal clock of the network device (client) with the main clock of the host computer through hardware and software, to provide the use of synchronization establishment time less than 10μs, and the Ethernet delay time of 1,000μs that does not implement the IEEE1588 protocol Compared to this, the timing synchronization index of the entire network has been significantly improved.
Features of IEEE1588:
1. The early network time protocol (NTP) only had software, and IEEE1588 used both software and hardware and software to obtain more precise timing synchronization;
2. The GPIB bus has no synchronous clock transmission, relying on parallel cables and limiting the cable length (distance per device) to no more than 5m to ensure that the delay is less than 30μs;
3. The data line and control line of GPIB are separated. VXI and PXI buses are expanded on the VME and PCI computer bus respectively, and clock lines must be added. IEEE1588 does not require additional clock lines, and still uses the original Ethernet data lines to transmit clock signals, simplifying networking and reducing costs
4. IEEE1588 adopts the time distribution mechanism and time scheduling concept. The client can use an ordinary oscillator to maintain synchronization with the main clock of the host computer through software scheduling. The process is simple and reliable, and a large number of clock cables are saved.
The IEEE1588 protocol has now been developed to version v2. 1588v2 improves v1 and improves the accuracy of synchronization; introduces transparent clock TC mode, including E2E transparent clock and P2P transparent clock, calculates the residence time introduced by the intermediate network equipment, so as to achieve accurate time synchronization between master and slave, and new Inter-port delay measurement mechanism, etc., reduces the accumulation error in large network topology through asymmetric correction
