Audio is an indispensable part of portable consumer electronic devices. The integrated headphone audio power amplifier helps amplify low-power baseband audio signals to drive crisp, clear audio when using headphones. In addition, these amplifiers need to have extremely high efficiency in order to achieve a longer battery life. To meet this challenge, designers will use a class G audio amplifier topology.
Efficiency is defined as the ratio of output power (power supplied to the load) to input power (power drawn from the battery), expressed as a percentage. Higher efficiency means that less battery power is wasted in the form of heat loss. In order to improve the battery life of portable audio equipment, the amplifier needs higher efficiency.
Typical linear audio amplifier topologies are Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class AB. Although these audio amplifiers are all linear; their efficiency is not very high. See Table 1 and Figure 1.

Class AB (linear) amplifiers have a fixed power rail and consume a fixed amount of power current to obtain an ideal output voltage. In the Bridged Load (BTL) state, this supply current is equal to the output current. The supply current through the load causes a voltage drop across all output MOSFETs. These currents, which increase the voltage drop of the MOSFET, form a large power consumption in the amplifier, which is why the efficiency of the class AB amplifier is only 50%.
