Oculus invests in high-quality VR video content to create a new VR experience

Virtual Reality (VR) is gradually stepping into the mainstream, even though it still requires time to fully integrate with Other technologies. However, its growing popularity cannot be stopped. Whether in gaming or everyday life, VR has the potential to offer users more immersive and convenient experiences. In 2018, Oculus announced plans to invest heavily in high-quality VR video content, aiming to create a range of innovative and engaging experiences for users. Oculus hopes to reach a broader audience, but achieving this goal requires more than just ambition—it demands concrete strategies and actions. Fortunately, the gaming community has shown strong enthusiasm for new technologies, which has helped VR make its way onto the stage. But for VR to truly go mainstream, it needs to appeal to people beyond gamers. To expand the reach of VR technology, the head-mounted displays must deliver what the general public actually wants. Oculus understands this well, and as a result, they have introduced a series of new VR experiences, showcasing them at events like the Sundance Film Festival. These more compelling experiences are expected to attract a wider user base and bring more people into the VR space. Of course, there are still challenges that VR faces, such as the need for compatible PCs and the high cost of headsets. However, products like the Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR offer more accessible and user-friendly options. With their launch, the next challenge becomes how to convince consumers to purchase these devices. Colum Slevin, head of Oculus' experience department, expressed high expectations for the future of the Oculus brand in 2018. He stated, “We reinvigorated in 2018, and we're working with VR storytellers and creators to produce the best stories and help bring them to market.” His vision emphasizes collaboration and quality in content creation. Slevin continued, “We will maintain a strict selection process for the projects we support. I hope this approach leads to exceptional works... but our main focus is on elevating the entire community, as diversity is key to innovation. I don’t believe there's only one solution or one style that can make VR popular. We need a variety of approaches and different experiences.” He also highlighted the importance of 6-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) technology, which enhances interactivity in VR. “We’re very interested in the power of interactivity and the potential of 6DoF to unlock the full capabilities of VR,” he added. This emphasis on interaction and immersion shows Oculus’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of what VR can achieve.
