China Mobile plans to pilot Internet TV business in January next year

Recently, it was reported that China Mobile Group has officially planned its Internet TV business and will conduct a pilot in January 2013.

China Mobile plans to do Internet TV business for a long time. China Mobile Group has set up an Internet TV business project group internally, and has drafted a draft system plan for OTV Internet TV technology, and communicated with most of the licensees of radio and television and reached a preliminary cooperation agreement.

Previously, China Mobile Group Corporation obtained the "Information Network Communication Audiovisual Program License" issued by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. According to the license, the group company authorized China Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. to carry out Internet audio-visual program services and mobile TV distribution services.

In which cities will be piloted, a staff member of the China Mobile Internet TV Business Project Team stated that it has not yet been finalized and “is still talking”.

It is understood that China Mobile has positioned the Internet TV business as "a broadband video OTT service that can effectively cope with the IPTV competition among its business partners."

According to Wu Yichuan, a staff member of the China Mobile Research Institute, said that before this, China Telecom and China Unicom launched a bundled package service of "mobile phone + broadband + IPTV". These bundled package services caused a large number of mobile phone users in China to lose and ARPU value decreased. . On the other hand, there is a serious shortage of resources within the mobile network, resulting in high settlement fees between the networks. It is understood that 90% of the network resources are on the external network, and 85% of website visits need to be out of network, resulting in huge interoperability costs between the networks. China Mobile and China Telecom’s inter-network settlement price is 1 million yuan/G/month, and China Mobile is bidirectional. Settlement and settlement costs are higher. At the same time, export bandwidth is congested and user experience is poor. The utilization rate of the export bandwidth exceeds 90%, and the delay is large and the packet loss rate is high.

Wu Yichuan said that China Mobile's development of broadband video business mainly has two aspects. First, it enhances broadband competitiveness and user stickiness, and reduces the loss of mobile phone users caused by the opponent's binding strategy. The second is to increase the occupancy rate of IDC and reduce cross-network traffic and settlement fees between networks.

China Mobile also plans to combine Internet TV services with LTE networks. In addition to the use of OTV on the fixed line network, OTV can also be well adapted to wireless broadband access networks such as LTE and WLAN. It is understood that the existing OTV system does not require major modifications on the service platform and the terminal side, but it needs to do some adaptation work on the wireless channel to access the LTE network.
