Indoor LED lighting drive power technology analysis

The lighting industry is booming and the market for LED lighting is growing. Due to its energy-saving, pollution-free and long-life performance, LED lighting fixtures will replace existing incandescent and fluorescent energy-saving lamps in a few years. China's LED lighting industry is experiencing big waves and the survival of the fittest. Manufacturers should strive to optimize and improve themselves. In 2012, the LED lighting industry was hardly affected by the global economic crisis. Instead, it was rapidly developed under the strong promotion of governments. The LED lighting industry chain has grown and improved rapidly during this economic crisis. The rapid development of next-generation LED lighting technology has driven millions of companies in the LED lighting industry chain to thrive.

The light source needs to be driven by a clean DC constant current power source to make it flicker-free, high-brightness light, and illuminate the world. LED lighting drive technology is also entering the healthy development era of constant current source driver chip for LED lighting from the regulated power supply chip that uses switching power supply, adapter and charger.

The biggest feature of indoor general lighting is the massive and inexpensive. For example, an LED light source that directly replaces an incandescent lamp and a fluorescent energy-saving lamp, the lumen number is mainly between 900 LM, and the power of the corresponding LED light source is about 3 W to 10 W. Since 2013, the price of LED lamps and lanterns of international manufacturers has entered 1 yuan/WW. How to reduce the cost of driving power sources in LED light sources has become an important issue in the development of LED lighting. How to make the performance of the LED driver power supply meet the needs of LED lighting fixtures, and the cost can be controlled, the high-performance LED power supply driver chip is the key.

At present, the driving power supply for indoor LED lighting fixtures mainly includes primary side control (PSR) isolated switching constant current source, non-isolated switching constant current source, high voltage linear constant current source, and non-linear switching constant current source. Resistor-capped buck was forcibly eliminated in 2013 due to the European Union ERP directive for all LED luminaires with power factor (PF) requirements. The common scheme of indoor LED lighting driver power supply is shown in Figure 1.


Resistor-capacitor buck and steady current diode CRD

Simple power supply circuits for RC and DC-regulated diodes (CRD) also have a place in low-end LED lighting products. The self-power consumption of the RC is not large, and it is not safe. The steady current diode (CRD) can only provide a small stable current to the LED lamp bead at a constant voltage. Generally, it is less than, and can not provide constant current in a large voltage fluctuation range. When the grid power supply fluctuates, the current cannot be stabilized. Therefore, neither of these methods can meet the needs of indoor LED lighting formal lighting products. A typical application of a current-sense diode (CRD) is shown in Figure 2.


Flyback isolation switch constant current drive power technology

Primary side control (PSR) flyback isolated switching constant current source is the most practical circuit used in indoor LED lighting fixtures using low voltage LED lamp beads (LV LED) as the light source. It is the mainstream circuit of LED lighting fixtures. Switching constant current source driver chip with high functional integration, simple application circuit and few peripheral components, such as BP3102, BP3122 and MT7953.

And BP3122 is currently the largest shipment of chips in the mainland, shipping more than 10 KK per month.


The flyback-isolated LED driver power supply with feedback from the primary side is recommended for use in LED lighting replacement lamps. Its application circuit is relatively simple and takes up less space. This type of driver chip is currently available in many varieties. The chip design of China's local LED lighting switch constant current source is almost synchronous with foreign countries. The difference between chip technology and international products is not very large. Because it is designed and manufactured in China, it has very Good value for money. Panasonic, Sharp, and Philips have already used a large number of chips from Jingfeng Mingyuan and Meixin. Taking the domestic BPS chip as an example, the typical circuit of BP3102 is shown in Figure 3. It uses a flyback high-frequency transformer to isolate the input and output loops. A typical high-frequency transformer consists of a primary winding NP, a secondary winding NS, and an auxiliary winding NAUX. The primary winding NP stores energy when it is turned on, and the secondary winding NS supplies current and energy to the LED and the output capacitor when the MOSFET is turned off. The auxiliary winding NAUX usually realizes secondary winding demagnetization detection (current zero-crossing detection), chip power supply. And output open circuit protection, sometimes the auxiliary winding NAUX can also be used for output short circuit protection detection and input line voltage compensation. Applying this solution 1-5W LED bulb lamp isolation without passing the certification constant current power supply cost can be within the yuan.
