(Original headline: Facebook's facial recognition now finds photos you're untagged in)
According to a recent report from TechCrunch, Facebook has rolled out a new feature called Photo Review, designed to help users better manage their online presence. This update allows the platform to notify users when their face appears in a photo that they haven't been tagged in. The notification gives users the option to ask the uploader to remove the image or report it directly to Facebook.
This new tool is aimed at giving users more control over how their images are shared online. It also helps prevent unauthorized use of personal photos and reduces the risk of identity fraud. However, Facebook clarified that this facial recognition technology won’t be used for targeted advertising. For example, the company won’t show users more posts from friends who uploaded untagged photos or display ads related to those images.
If your face appears in someone’s profile picture—typically a public photo—you will always receive a notification. For other photos where you’re just a background figure, Facebook will only alert you if the uploader’s privacy settings allow it. The Photo Review feature keeps track of all your untagged but confirmed photos, giving users a clearer view of their digital footprint.
Nipun Mather, a product manager on Facebook’s machine learning team, explained that the goal of this feature is to empower users, enhance their sense of security, and even bring back some nostalgic memories by helping them find old photos they might have forgotten about.
The feature will be available globally in the coming weeks, with exceptions in regions like Europe and Canada, where strict privacy laws currently restrict the use of facial recognition technology. In addition to improving user control, Facebook is also using the feature to assist visually impaired users. Its AI-powered tools can now describe the content of photos and even read out the names of untagged friends aloud.
Rob Sherman, Facebook’s second-time privacy officer, said, “Our long-term goal is to make these features widely available, but for now, we’re focusing on markets where label recommendations are supported.â€
