In late November, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released its latest economic performance report for the telecommunications sector. The data highlights significant trends in user growth, network speed adoption, and declining traditional communication services.
According to the report, 4G users now make up nearly 70% of the total mobile phone user base, which has reached 1.41 billion nationwide. Additionally, over 120 million users have access to fixed broadband speeds of 100 Mbps or higher, while more than 231 million users are connected at 50 Mbps or above, representing 66.9% of all fixed broadband subscribers.
Meanwhile, traditional voice call volumes have continued to decline. From January to November, the total outgoing call duration on mobile phones was 2.46 trillion minutes, a 4.4% drop compared to the same period last year. Fixed local telephone usage also fell sharply, with a 18.5% year-on-year decrease to 140.5 billion minutes.
SMS traffic and revenue have also seen a slowdown in their decline. Mobile SMS service volume reached 604.1 billion messages during the first 11 months of the year, down just 0.8% from the previous year. However, mobile MMS traffic dropped by 12.3%, totaling 44.8 billion messages. Despite this, SMS revenue remained relatively stable, reaching 32.4 billion yuan, a slight 3.2% decrease compared to the previous year.
The MIIT’s report reflects the ongoing shift toward high-speed internet and digital communication, as well as the gradual decline of traditional voice and text-based services. With 4G dominating the market and broadband speeds increasing, the telecom industry is adapting to new consumer demands and technological advancements.
