In December 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released its latest data on the performance of China's telecommunications sector. According to the report, 4G users now make up nearly 70% of the total mobile user base, reflecting the continued dominance of 4G technology in the market. Additionally, the number of users with a broadband connection exceeding 100Mbps has reached 120 million, showing significant progress in high-speed internet access.
The report also highlights the ongoing decline in SMS traffic and revenue, though the rate of decline has been slowing down. Mobile SMS service volume for the first 11 months of the year totaled 604.1 billion messages, a slight decrease of 0.8% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, MMS traffic dropped by 12.3%, reaching 44.8 billion messages. Despite this, SMS business revenue stood at 32.4 billion yuan, a 3.2% drop from the previous year.
In terms of voice services, both mobile and fixed-line call durations have seen declines. From January to November, the total outgoing mobile call duration was 2.46 trillion minutes, down 4.4% year-on-year. Fixed local telephone call duration fell even more sharply, dropping 18.5% to 140.5 billion minutes.
On the broadband front, the number of fixed broadband users with speeds of 100Mbps or higher reached 120 million, while those with 50Mbps or above totaled 231 million, making up 66.9% of all broadband users. This indicates a strong push towards faster and more reliable internet connections across the country.
These figures highlight the evolving landscape of China’s telecommunications industry, where high-speed internet is becoming more widespread, while traditional services like SMS and landline calls are gradually losing ground. The data underscores the shift in consumer behavior and the growing demand for faster, more efficient communication solutions.
