3Glasses Wang Jie: The era of 1.0 to 2.0 changes VR from entertainment to connect more people and services

Recently, 3Glasses launched a new Windows Mixed Reality head-mounted display, the Lanpo S2, along with the MiniVR host 3BOX A1. These innovations are reshaping VR application scenarios and introducing a fresh business model in the virtual reality space.

According to VR Network, the Lanpo S2 marks the first consumer-grade mixed reality headset developed by a Chinese brand in collaboration with Microsoft. What makes it stand out is its plug-and-play design, eliminating the need for complex installation. Microsoft's deep-level support ensures optimal performance and compatibility with mainstream computers. Even entry-level PCs equipped with an Intel Core i5 7200U processor, Intel HD Graphics, and 8GB DDR3 memory can run it smoothly.

One of the biggest challenges for PC-based VR headsets has always been the high cost of required hardware—often exceeding 78,000 yuan. Additionally, setup was complicated, making the user experience less accessible. This issue has long been a pain point for both users and the industry. By addressing these foundational problems, Lanpo S2 represents a significant step toward bringing VR to the consumer market. Thanks to Microsoft’s low-level support, all compatibility and installation issues have been eliminated.

Beyond hardware, the Lanpo S2 offers a rich ecosystem with two major app stores and over 20,000 applications. Peter Han, Microsoft’s global vice president, mentioned that Microsoft has brought top content partners to 3Glasses. Starting November 15th, StreamVR will officially support Windows Mixed Reality, offering more than 2,000 VR game titles.

In terms of user experience, the Lanpo S2 delivers a refreshing feel. The headset is lightweight and well-balanced, reducing facial pressure and ensuring comfort during extended use. There’s no dizziness or discomfort, just an immersive and realistic experience. Once worn, users are fully engaged in the virtual world.

In the Windows Mixed Reality environment, users interact with a familiar Windows-like interface using 6DOF motion controllers. They can play games, watch movies, explore virtual galleries, or even visit famous landmarks around the world. If the virtual environment creates a sense of depth, like a large hole beneath their feet, users instinctively step back, feeling fully immersed in the experience.

Thanks to Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality platform, the interface is intuitive and easy to navigate. With the motion controller, users can become proficient within 5 to 10 minutes, making this product highly "approachable" for new users.

3Glasses has accumulated 15 years of expertise in virtual reality technology, positioning itself as one of China’s leading companies in the field. During an interview, Wang Jie described the period from 2014 to 2017 as the “spring, summer, autumn, and winter” of the VR industry. He referred to this time as the 1.0 era of both 3Glasses and the broader VR industry, highlighting the progress made in hardware, platforms, and business models.

Over four years, 3Glasses launched three hardware products, a foundational platform, and a scalable business model that transitioned from VR to MR. In 2016, 3Glasses officially partnered with Microsoft, becoming one of only six MR partners. The release of the Lanpo S1 Developer Edition marked the beginning of 3Glasses’ MR era, while the Lanpo S2 signaled the arrival of MR in the consumer market.

Looking ahead, Wang Jie outlined three key standards for future VR devices: wireless connectivity, extreme lightness, and natural interaction that aligns with human body mechanics. To address these, 3Glasses introduced the 3BOX A1 mini-host, a mobile VR solution developed in collaboration with Qualcomm. This device is designed to be sleek, lightweight, and secure, supporting multiple usage scenarios and convenient connectivity. It operates independently and can work with various HMDs and peripherals to meet the needs of different users.

While 3Glasses focused on offline entertainment experiences in the 1.0 era, the company now sees VR as a powerful tool that can integrate with various industries. In the 2.0 era, 3Glasses aims to connect more people and services through B2B2C models, expanding the impact of VR beyond entertainment and into everyday life.
