LED upstream material sapphire substrate supplier Rubicon Technology, Inc. announced the fourth quarter of 2011 (October-December) earnings report: due to weak demand due to excess supply in the LED supply chain, revenue decreased by 34% (quarter decreased by 42%) ) to US$ 19.4 million, close to the lower margin of the previous forecast range; gross profit margin reached 12.1%, lower than 48% in the previous quarter, mainly due to the decline in pricing and capacity utilization; diluted earnings per share reached 0.04 US dollars.
Looking forward to this quarter (January-March), Rubicon expects revenue to be between $8 million and $12 million, down 38-59% quarterly; dilution loss per share will be $0.10-0.14, mainly due to polishing and manufacturing Capacity utilization continued to drop.
Rubicon pointed out that LED market conditions showed signs of improvement during the first quarter, orders for 2-4 inch wafers have slightly recovered, but pricing is still low due to the early recovery. In addition, because the customer's 6-inch wafer inventory is already quite high, this market is unlikely to receive a large number of orders. In terms of silicon on sapphire substrates, demand for large-size wafers continues to rise, but the market is smaller.
