SiI9287 achieves multiple HDMI interface design

Integrating multiple HDMI interfaces into a TV set introduces a new problem: HDMI has a few seconds of HDCP authentication before it is transmitted, so it usually takes 4 to 7 seconds to switch between different HDMI sources. . To solve this problem, Silicon Image introduced InstaPort technology, which is Pre-AuthenTIcaTIon technology. When the source device is connected to the TV, the HDCP authorization process is not performed immediately until the source device is selected as input by the digital TV. However, DTVs that support InstaPort technology can perform HDCP authorization routing immediately after connecting the source device, so when the user selects the source device, the content will be played instantly (usually within 1 second) without waiting for HDCP authorization.

The SiI9287 port processor is a product that supports InstaPort technology. The SiI9287 includes four HDMI 1.3 inputs that support InstaPort technology and supports the latest technologies such as InstaPort, Adaptive Equalization, and Mobile High-Definition Connectivity (MHL). In terms of solution selection, the SiI9287 and the four-input HDMI 1.3 receiver SiI9223 are products for different applications. When the main chip has integrated an HDMI decoder, the SiI9287 can be used to expand the HDMI port from one to multiple. When the main chip does not use the HDMI decoder, the SiI9223 can be used to add multiple HDMI ports to the system.

Since the SiI9287 uses a TMDS output, its chip pins are much smaller than the SiI9223 with parallel bus output, so the design of the SiI9287 is more convenient. This convenience is mainly reflected in: the design is more convenient due to the reduction of the number of pins; the built-in power conditioner, the power supply design is more convenient, and the BOM cost such as the decoupling capacitor can be saved; the ESD protection capability is better, and the external saving can be omitted. ESD device helps to save BOM cost; CEC API can facilitate firmware design; output is differential TMDS signal, instead of SiI9223 parallel data bus, it is more convenient for EMI design; the fifth EDID can support VGA interface design implementation.

In addition, the SiI9287-based design also saves labor costs on the production line, including saving EDID programming time (in the previous production, each HDMI port had to manually burn an EDID manually, which took time and effort) and HDMI port detection time (detection) 4 HDMI ports, only the TV itself switches time, 20 to 40 seconds without InstaPort, after using InstaPort technology, it will greatly improve the detection efficiency of the production line).

(1) Based on Rx+Tx mode

The SiI9287 family of chips is defined by Silicon Image as a port processor to distinguish it from ordinary multiplexer-based HDMI switches. Unlike these multiplexer-based HDMI switches, the SiI9287 family of chips has a complete HDMI Tx and Rx core, ensuring high reliability and error-free transmission of HDMI connections. Due to the effects of low quality source or long cable transmissions, multiplexer-based HDMI switches sometimes do not work properly or do not effectively improve signals that have been severely attenuated. The SiI9287 ensures the reliability of the HDMI link and perfectly reproduces the signal.

(2) Pre-authentication and fast channel conversion

The SiI9287 has two TMDS pipelines and two HDCP modules. While the TMDS pipeline and one HDCP module complete the normal receiving and displaying functions, the other TMDS pipeline and HDCP module can scan the remaining ports and complete HDCP pre-authentication, so that no delay can be achieved when switching the HDMI port. display. Compared with the normal HDMI switch with 4~7 seconds switching time, the SiS9287 with InstaPort function can switch and display between HDMI ports in less than 1 second. (3) Adaptive equalization

The SiI9287 supports adaptive equalization. Adaptive equalization allows for adaptation of cables of different lengths. When the cable is long, the equalization amplitude is automatically increased. When the cable is short, the equalization amplitude is automatically lowered. Compared to fixed-amplitude equalization, adaptive equalization does not compromise the reception performance of cables of other lengths in order to optimize the reception performance of cables of a certain length. (4) Power management

The SiI9287 uses power island power management technology to ensure low power consumption (<35mW) in standby mode. In addition, when the host is powered off, the power island can be powered by +5V on the HDMI cable, so that the EDID is still readable when the power is off, which opens the door for further expansion of the CEC function. The SiI9287's built-in power conditioner, powered by a single voltage, simplifies power supply design.

(5) CEC function

The SiI9287 integrates CEC functionality without the need for an external CEC device. In addition, the CEC API simplifies the design and implementation of firmware, which speeds time-to-market.

(6) 5xEDID

The SiI9287 is a four-interface HDMI input, but integrates five EDID modules, and the additional EDID module can be used for VGA interface design.

(7) MHL and HDMI dual mode reception

MHL is a mobile HD interface technology developed by Silicon Image with top handset manufacturers. MHL and HDMI are also based on TMDS technology, and the SiI9287 is a chip that supports MHL and HDMI dual-mode reception.

(8) ESD performance
