LED backlight applications still face many challenges, cost and unit performance are key

The current LED backlight design still faces many challenges

What is the future trend of LED backlighting? Cost, supply, heat dissipation, power consumption... How do these major LED TV manufacturers solve the most difficult problems? When designing a new generation of LED TVs, what are the key factors to pay special attention to? Lu Weihang, a senior engineer in 3M's Optical Systems Division, believes that the LED TV market still faces some major challenges.

First of all, the main problem of LED TV is still the cost, and as major TV manufacturers are actively making efforts to reduce costs. Of course, as the LED manufacturing process matures, the cost of the LED itself will also decrease accordingly. However, in addition to the cost of the LED itself, the cost pressure as a light guide plate, an optical film, a structure, and an LED drive circuit of a backlight element will become increasingly prominent.

This problem requires the major upstream manufacturers to continuously improve production efficiency. At the same time, the introduction of new technologies, simplification of TV design, thinner light guides, fewer optical films, simpler circuits, and fewer LED strips are the future directions for LED TV technology design. Reduce costs and do your best.

Secondly, as the LED TV backlight, the supply of its core components, supply chain (light guide, LED, etc.) is also a very important factor. In this regard, due to the expansion of production capacity of major LED factories in 2010, the shortage of LEDs is basically solved at present, but the light guide plate is still in contradiction. Therefore, as a technological innovation, the thinner light guide plate design is believed to be the direction of the new LED TV.

Again, it is to solve the problem of heat dissipation. Although the corresponding thermal power consumption will decrease slightly as the LED luminous efficiency increases, in the large-size LED TV, the heat dissipation of the LED is always a hard stone that plagues most TV manufacturers. The high temperature environment will reduce the life of the LED, and at the same time make the mechanism more unstable, the optical will be affected, and the life of nearby electronic components will also be reduced. Therefore, a good heat dissipation design is essential in the LED TV.

At this point, the contradiction between using high-efficiency products and cost pressures is difficult to balance. Usually as a manufacturer, after considering the system cost comprehensively, some high-efficiency components are introduced, which usually have better effects.

Finally, the power consumption of LED TVs. As we all know, a series of energy-saving institutions such as Energy Star have made regulations on the energy consumption of LED TVs in the world, and the corresponding energy efficiency labels have been issued in China. In the future LED design, especially in some new LED backlight TVs (such as 3D TV, smart TV, etc.), energy consumption will become a big problem. I believe that with the current global concern for the environment, China as a developing country, the government is also vigorously promoting the concept of energy conservation, energy consumption will become a market orientation in the future.

In terms of power consumption, similar to heat dissipation, the application of high-performance components is the cure.

LED backlights have different trends in different sizes of product applications

In applications such as portable mobile terminals, tablets and mobile phones, LED backlights will continue to dominate the number of digits, and their cost will continue to decrease.

In the size field of notebooks, displays, etc., the backlight cost of LEDs in notebooks is even lower than that of conventional CCFL backlights, and LED backlights will be difficult to replace in recent years. In addition, in the field of displays, with the light and thin requirements of the market, LEDs will also eat away from traditional CCFL backlights in the next year or two.

In the large-size TV field, with the market's light and thin orientation on the TV, the LED backlight in 2010 greatly encroached on the CCF backlight share. In the near future, as costs continue to fall, CCFL backlights will exit the stage of history. At the same time, between the LEDs, there are two technical disputes between the direct and the side-in, after two years of market precipitation, the side-in-one laughs to the end.

With the availability of key device light guides, side-in LED backlights will gradually replace direct-lit backlights. In the current side-entry backlight design, since 2009, the market has developed from four-sided LED strips to two-sided LED strips, to the current single-sided long-edge LED strips and applied to larger sizes. It is believed that in the near future, the structure will be more simplified, and the design of double-sided short-edge LED strips and single-sided short-edge LED strips will gradually become mainstream.

From a technical point of view, LED brightness, efficiency, packaging, heat dissipation design and display uniformity and many other factors will also affect the development of LED backlight.

In terms of brightness and efficiency, the luminous efficiency of the LED chip will continue to increase, and the lm/W output will continue to increase. In the next 10 years, commercial backlight LEDs will double their luminous efficiency.

On the LED package, with the advancement of technology, multi-chip LEDs will replace single-chip LEDs in some backlight applications, further reducing the cost of LEDs.

In the heat dissipation design, due to the improvement of the luminous efficiency, the energy excited by the LED will be more converted into the light energy output, and as the heat energy is reduced, the heat dissipation design cost of the LED will be reduced.

From the color point of view, the original application of LED as a high-end application, once used RGB LED, so that the display color is more abundant. Due to the pressure of cost, more white LEDs are currently excited by phosphor powder to achieve higher light efficiency. However, it is believed that in the future, the market will have different requirements for display technology, LED efficiency will be improved, and cost will be reduced. The application of RGB LED will occupy a certain high-end market.

In terms of uniformity of display, LED binning will be more mature. At the same time, there will be more solutions for the LED driver design to ensure that the circuit inputs of the LEDs in the display device are the same, realizing various high, medium and low-end applications.

In addition, with the emergence of various new types of displays, such as 3D TV, 3D notebooks, 3D displays, smart TVs, etc., the future development of LEDs will certainly be affected.
