TowerJazz and Crocus have announced a strategic collaboration to mass-produce TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistive) magnetic sensors using TowerJazz’s 0.13µm CMOS process with a dedicated magnetic module. This partnership combines Crocus’ expertise in TMR technology and embedded MRAM with TowerJazz’s advanced manufacturing capabilities, enabling the production of high-performance, low-power sensors for various industries. The collaboration has already resulted in a licensing deal with a top-tier customer, strengthening both companies' positions in the sensor market.
Earlier this year, Crocus also licensed its TMR IP to NXP Semiconductors, a global leader in automotive semiconductors. This partnership is expected to enhance NXP’s automotive solutions by offering improved sensitivity, performance, and energy efficiency, supporting next-gen applications like power steering and electronic throttle control.
The global magnetic sensor market is projected to grow from $2.25 billion in 2015 to $4.16 billion by 2022, driven by rising demand across industries such as automotive and consumer electronics. TMR technology, which offers superior performance, lower power consumption, and compact design, is well-suited for IoT, medical, industrial, and automotive applications.
Crocus’ TMR technology leverages CMOS integration, allowing for single-chip ICs that deliver high reliability, durability, and temperature resistance. This makes it ideal for a wide range of smart sensing applications. Michel Desbard, CEO of Crocus, highlighted the importance of TowerJazz’s flexibility in integrating their TS13 platform with TMR technology, noting that this collaboration has helped advance the technology and expand business opportunities.
Zmira Shternfeld-Lavie, Vice President at TowerJazz, emphasized how the partnership supports the growing need for smart, low-power sensing solutions in the IoT era. By combining Crocus’ IP with TowerJazz’s manufacturing expertise, the companies aim to deliver innovative, competitive embedded solutions across multiple markets.
With a diverse range of TMR sensor architectures based on its patented Magnetic Logic Unit (MLU) technology, Crocus is poised to revolutionize sensor applications, offering a compelling alternative to traditional technologies. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the development and commercialization of next-generation magnetic sensing solutions.
